Provo High School teachers selected the senior class’s top scholars in October 2014. These 14 students were awarded one of the highest honors available at Utah high schools: Sterling Scholar. Each of them submitted a portfolio in January for evaluation, and 8 of our PHS Sterling Scholars have been selected to compete for the regional title.
Since 1962, Deseret News and KSL Broadcast Group have been sponsoring Sterling Scholars program in an effort to “recognize outstanding scholastic achievement of high school seniors in the State of Utah” (2014-15 Wasatch Front Region Handbook). Applications are open for all seniors, and the applicants are then whittled down by each department and a selection committee to the best of the 14 categories. With finalists from core subjects like social studies and English to the arts to technical skills, the final 14 Sterling Scholars are diverse and represent our student body’s various talents and interests.
Andrea Betts from Provo High’s College and Career Center takes over from here, prepping the candidates for interviews and working with them to prepare their portfolios. Last week, the portfolios were submitted to the Wasatch regional committee (including Box Elder, Cache, Davis, Salt Lake, Tooele, Utah, and Weber counties). Fifteen students were selected for each category to be judged on portfolios, interviews, and to present any items or performances in their category. Eight students were selected as semi-finalists to interview and present any items or performances in their category.

These intellectual forerunners will meet with the regional committees on Tuesday, February 10th. From there, 5 in each category will be selected to compete on a state level. Scholarship opportunities and prestige await those who make it to the top, and we will be supporting our Bulldogs to do just that! Congratulations, Sterling Scholars, and good luck.
